The ritual of Abhyanga: an ancient practice for naturally glowing skin

Abhyanga is the traditional practice of massaging the body with warm oil. More than a beauty ritual, it is a way of caring for the skin, the nervous system, and the sense of being at home in your body.

In classical wellness traditions, oiling the body is considered deeply nourishing. Warm oil softens dryness, supports circulation, and helps release the tension that builds through long workdays, travel, and restless sleep.

When done regularly, Abhyanga can leave the skin looking nourished and the mind feeling quieter. Many practitioners notice better sleep, softer skin texture, and a calmer response to daily stress.

Choose an oil suited to your body and season—sesame is often preferred in cooler months, while coconut may feel lighter in heat. Gently infused herbal oils can also be used when recommended by a knowledgeable guide.

Warm the oil slightly until it feels comfortable on the skin. Apply with long strokes on the limbs and circular motions on the joints. Move slowly. The quality of attention is as important as the oil itself.

Give special care to areas that hold tightness—neck, shoulders, lower back, and feet. Massaging the scalp (when appropriate) and soles of the feet can be especially grounding at the end of the day.

After the massage, rest for a few minutes and allow the oil to absorb before bathing with lukewarm water. Harsh scrubbing or very hot showers can undo some of the calming effect.

Pairing Abhyanga with slow breathing or a short meditation deepens the sense of calm. Even ten to fifteen minutes, practised a few times a week, can become a meaningful self-care rhythm.

Glowing skin is not only about products. It reflects how we rest, eat, move, and care for ourselves. Abhyanga is a simple, timeless practice that reconnects outer radiance with inner ease.

If you have skin conditions, allergies, or medical concerns, check with a practitioner before beginning. Start gently, stay consistent, and let the ritual remain restorative rather than hurried.

Your journey can begin anywhere: on a yoga mat, with a breath, in stillness or with a community.
